Show Notes

When your values and your job are out of sync, it’s only a matter of time before frustration sets in. You start questioning leadership, avoiding conversations, or not caring the way you used to. And the longer you ignore it, the harder it hits.

Values misalignment isn’t always obvious. It doesn’t always mean you’re in a toxic environment or working for a bad manager. Sometimes the company is fine, and you’re fine, except something has shifted.

Maybe you’ve grown or gone through a big life change and your priorities look different.

Maybe the organization shifted direction or brought in new leadership that doesn’t sit right with you.

Either way, the disconnect is real.

Signs of Career Misalignment

Misalignment often creeps in quietly. You realize you’re no longer proud of the product or the company. Leadership makes promises that don’t match their actions. You go through the motions, but your heart isn’t in it. And sometimes you can’t even explain why, you just know something feels off.

For professionals who care deeply about their work, this can be one of the most draining experiences. The frustration builds over time, not overnight, which makes it harder to pinpoint until you’re already worn down.

What To Do When Your Work and Values Clash

The first step is naming what’s not working. Ask yourself where the misalignment is happening. Is it you? Is it the company? Or a mix of both? If it’s you, maybe your values have shifted after a major life event. If it’s the company, maybe leadership, structure, or strategy has changed in ways you don’t support. Both can be true at the same time.

Once you can name the source, you have more options. You don’t need to quit tomorrow or burn everything down. Sometimes small adjustments make a big difference. Maybe you switch teams, set clearer boundaries, or reframe how you see the work. Other times, the misalignment runs deeper and leaving becomes the healthier choice. The important part is clarity. Knowing whether the gap is something you can manage or something that requires a bigger move.

A good question to ask yourself is: If I stayed in this job, what would need to change for me to feel aligned again? The answer will point you toward your next step.

One way to stay ahead of misalignment is to keep habits that ground you in your values.

→ Write down moments that feel “off” so you can spot patterns.

→ Revisit your values every six to twelve months to see if they’ve shifted.

→ Pay attention to what feels non-negotiable right now.

These habits give you awareness before things escalate into a crisis, and they help you make changes while you still have options.

Misalignment means something important has shifted, and it’s time to realign. My Control Your Career framework is designed to guide you through that process step by step. If you want to dig deeper, check out the free worksheet I created to help you organize your thoughts.

Your work should support what matters most to you. And if it doesn’t right now, you have the power to make changes that bring it back into alignment.
